I offer 5- day, and 10 -12 day intensive pottery courses in my ceramics studio in Liguria, Italy. The courses take place in the Ligurian mountain village of Montecalvo, surrounded by olive groves, with stunning views of the Apennine foothills. Accommodation is offered in partnership with the Bed & Breakfast Il Calderone, a short distance from my studio in a neighbouring village. Courses are available for booking all year round in an inspiring studio environment that is pleasantly cool during the summer months and heated with a wood burning stove during the winter.
Our cancellation policy for ceramic courses in Liguria is very flexible. Please contact me for any questions.
5 Day Intensive Pottery Course: Wheel throwing
In this intensive course you will be taught the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel, including clay wedging, centring and forming your first small pots. We will work with red clay from the Montelupo area near Florence, which is ideal for throwing on the potter’s wheel and creating onglaze painted ceramics.
The courses take place in small groups with a maximum of four participants. Each participant has an individual potter’s wheel for practice. The atmosphere is both relaxed and concentrated, with each participant being encouraged to find their own rhythm for creating on the wheel.
The courses are designed for beginners whilst also being suitable for those with prior experience of ceramics, who would like to restart or deepen their skills.

10 and 12 Day Intensive Pottery Courses: Wheel throwing and onglaze painting.
This intensive pottery course offers an immersion into the art of Italian pottery. You will learn the basics of throwing and turning pots, including glazing and onglaze painting with the Italian Maiolica technique. Each participant will be encouraged to find their own rhythm for working in the studio and over the 10 or 12 days there will be plenty of time to develop skills via hands on experience.
The course will cover the whole process of ceramics production, including loading the kiln for bisque and glaze firing. Each participant will have the opportunity to bisque fire, glaze and paint their own ceramics during the course. The Maiolica technique is a colourful and rewarding method for painting ceramics.
These courses take place in small groups with a maximum of four participants, each having access to an individual potter’s wheel for practice. The courses are designed for beginners whilst also being suitable for those with prior experience of ceramics, who would like to restart or deepen their skills.
The 10-Day and 12 Day Intensive Courses are an ideal preparation if you would like to work independently in your own studio or in a shared workshop space.

What others say:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed two courses with Lisa at her beautiful ceramics studio in Montecalvo, Liguria. Lisa is a highly skilled and dedicated ceramicist combining patient and clear instructions with fluent language in English, Italian and German (depending on preferred language of students). In her cosy studio with small groups, there is plenty of time for instruction and personal guidance; and encouragement to also try by yourself. Results are good even for beginners, or students with very rusty skills such as myself. Lisa takes especial care to teach about all the methods and materials, types of clay, slips and glazes and decorative effects. I was very pleased with everything I accomplished in a few days. The views from the studio of the spectacular surroundings are just a bonus.”
